Handicapped staterooms on Zaandam, appear much the same in design as do normal ones. To accommodate handicapped guests, the entryway has been widened, as well as the doorway leading to the Bathroom. Floors are entirely flat, with no step or lip anywhere to be found. The bathroom does away with the tub, replacing it with a shower facility large enough to accommodate the wheel chair. A grab bar spans the full width of the bathroom providing leverage, if needed, for ambulatory impaired individuals to pull themselves to their feet within the shower. In the event of problems, an emergency cord is nearby, also within the shower. Just like in the regular cabins, a retractable clothesline stretches across the shower to hang wet swimsuits. BUT, in this case, it’s located low, within arms reach of a seated individual. The shower sprayhead is height adjustable, as it is in all cabins. The only flaw I noticed was the placement of the cabin thermostat, on the wall at its normal height and thus, not accessible by the wheelchair bound. |
