Norwegian Crown was built in Germany in 1988 as the Crown Odyssey, the flagship for Royal Cruise Line. She is a mid-sized, traditionally designed ship, contributing little that was new to the industry. This was perfectly okay with loyal customers of Royal, who sought the sophistication of destination oriented cruise experiences rather than simply sailing in circles in the Caribbean or Alaska on a floating hotel. For them, the ship was a bus, used for ocean transportation, and, with Royal Odyssey, a fine bus indeed! The future of Royal Odyssey became clouded after Norwegian Cruise Line's purchases of Royal Cruise Line and Royal Viking Line. Both lines were purchased with no plan or goal, seemingly, only to prevent them from becoming part of another line. A short time later, Norwegian Cruise Line paid the price: their finances drained, and none of their lines able to maintain their previous levels of service, they fought to stave off creditors. One by one, Royal Viking and Royal cruise ships became consolidated into the Norwegian Cruise line brand, their reputations for quality gone! Eventually, most, of necessity, were sold. The Crown Odyssey, survived, becoming the Norwegian Crown. Norwegian Crown is 34,242 tons. 615.9 feet long. 92 feet wide with a 23.8 foot draft. She is registered in the Bahamas with Norwegian officers and an International service staff. She is diesel powered. |
